Clearing Things Up: How to Prevent Stained Invisalign Aligners

One of the biggest advantages of Invisalign treatment is discretion. Clear aligners are designed to be nearly invisible, allowing you to straighten your teeth without drawing any extra attention to yourself. That said, it can be quite frustrating to notice that your Invisalign aligners are starting to look yellow or cloudy. However, this is no reason to be upset; it’s a common issue, and one that can be easily corrected with a few simple adjustments to your routine.

Why Do Invisalign Aligners Turn Yellow?

There are several reasons why your aligners may begin to discolor:

  • Drinking beverages other than water – Coffee, tea, red wine, and even sports drinks can all stain your aligners, especially if you drink them while wearing your Invisalign.
  • Smoking or vaping – Nicotine and tobacco products are common causes of yellowing, and they can stain teeth and aligners alike.
  • Inadequate cleaning – Since your aligners are worn 22 hours a day, if plaque and bacteria aren’t regularly cleared away, they can accumulate and cause discoloration.
  • Using the wrong cleaning products – You should never use regular toothpaste to clean your aligners, since it can be abrasive and create scratches on your aligners, which can trap stains.

How Can I Prevent Stained or Cloudy Aligners?

The best way to keep your aligners crystal clear is prevention. You should always remove your aligners before eating or drinking anything aside from plain water. They can’t become stained if they’re safely stored in your case while you enjoy your meal, snack, or beverage! It’s also important to remember that if you take your aligners out, you’ll want to rinse them before putting them back in. This prevents dried saliva and plaque from building up, which can contribute to staining.

You will need to thoroughly clean your Invisalign twice a day using a soft-bristled toothbrush and clear, unscented soap. Invisalign cleaning crystals can also be used to help remove buildup without harming the aligners. It’s also worth mentioning that you shouldn’t smoke or use tobacco during Invisalign treatment, for both the sake of your oral health as well as your aligners!

What If My Aligners Are Already Yellow?

If your current trays are nearing the end of their wear cycle, which is normally no more than two weeks, mild discoloration isn’t usually a huge concern since you’ll be swapping to a new set soon. However, if you just started wearing your trays and they’re already very stained, they feel rough rather than smooth, or there’s a persistent odor, you should speak with your dentist.

Do not try to whiten your aligners with bleach or harsh chemicals, as this can damage them, as well as potentially cause irritation to your gums. Also, don’t forget to maintain your oral hygiene, either—sometimes the aligners can look yellow because the underlying teeth are actually dirty!
