Did you know that cavities are one of the most common oral health issues in the world?  It’s estimated that 9 in every 10 adults in the US have experienced a cavity at some point. Large or small, these issues can pose a threat not just to the tooth they’re found in, but also to the entire smile if left unaddressed. Fortunately, cavities can often be prevented with a few easy steps, including visiting your dentist regularly for routine preventive care. Here’s what you need to know.

6 Must-Know Tips for Preventing Cavities

While cavities are highly preventable, it falls on you to take the right precautions. Keep the following tips in mind:

1. Brush & Floss Regularly

Brushing your teeth at least twice a day and flossing at least once a day, especially after meals, are the best ways to remove plaque and prevent cavities. Be sure to use a toothbrush with soft bristles and a fluoride toothpaste—electric toothbrushes are even better!

2. Limit Your Sugar Intake

Foods and drinks high in sugar and acid can erode the enamel on your teeth, making them more susceptible to cavities. Try to limit your intake of candy, soda, and other sugary treats, and opt for water, or other healthy options instead.

3. Visit Your Dentist Regularly

Regular checkups and cleanings with your dentist can help prevent cavities by removing plaque and tartar that you may have missed while brushing and flossing. They can also check for early signs of decay and address it before it worsens.

4. Chew Sugar-Free Gum

Chewing sugar-free gum after meals can help increase saliva flow, which neutralizes acid and washes away food particles. Just keep in mind that it is by no means a substitute for brushing and flossing.

5. Consider the Impact of Fluoride

Fluoride is a mineral that helps strengthen tooth enamel and prevent cavities. It can be found in toothpaste, mouthwash, and tap water. If your tap water is not fluoridated, your dentist may recommend fluoride supplements.

6. Consider Dental Sealants

Dental sealants, a protective coating applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth, can be an effective way to prevent cavities, especially in children. However, they can be just as effective for permanent teeth as well.

By following these tips, you can reduce your risk of cavities and maintain a healthy, beautiful smile for life. Remember, prevention is key when it comes to oral health!
